MINI Roadster

For 2012, MINI introduces the MINI Roadster, the first two-seat convertible in brand history. About the same length and width as the Coupe or Convertible models, the Roadster is equipped with a manually operated black fabric roof. To put the top down, all the driver has to do is twist a latch on the windshield frame and pull back the roof into a storage space behind the front seats. As MINI puts it, the vehicle is imbued with a “full-blooded go-kart feeling,” thanks to a chassis stabilized by extra bracing in the rear and reinforced rocker panels. An active rear spoiler opens at 50 mph and retracts when speeds slow to 37 mph. Engine variants, meanwhile, are offered at three different levels: the Cooper Roadster has a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 121 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque. The car will hit 60 mph in 8.7 seconds with a top speed of 124 mph. The Cooper S Roadster has a turbocharged version of that same engine, producing 181 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. It reaches 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and tops off at 141 mph. Finally, the John Cooper Works Roadster is powered by a turbo-charged 1.6-liter engine, good for 208 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. It takes 6.3 seconds to achieve 60 mph, and will max out at 147 mph. Six speed manual transmission is standard on all trims, while the Cooper and Cooper S can be equipped with six-speed automatic.
